What is the Osteoporosis.

Assoc.Prof. Thongchai Suntrapha, MD

This video discusses Osteoporosis, a condition in which bones have reduced density, making them brittle and easily broken. It focuses on risk groups, such as those who have gone through premature menopause, those with a family history of osteoporosis, or those taking certain medications, such as steroids.

Diagnosing osteoporosis can be done by measuring bone mass, or if such tools are not available, a preliminary risk assessment can be done on the FRAX website.

Osteoporosis treatment is divided into 2 main parts:

  1. Non-drug treatment: Emphasizing behavioral changes, such as eating foods with enough calcium and vitamin D, exercising regularly, especially weight-bearing exercises such as walking, running, or light weight lifting.
  2. Drug treatment: The doctor will consider choosing the right medication for each individual. There are many types of drugs to choose from, both in pill and injection form.

Additional precautions and advice:

  • Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages are major risk factors for osteoporosis. They should be avoided.
  • Drinking coffee in moderation (no more than 3 cups per day) will not affect calcium absorption. However, if you drink more than the recommended amount, Milk should be added to help absorb calcium.
  • Eating calcium in the right amount is important, but consuming too much can cause side effects such as constipation.

In conclusion, osteoporosis is a disease that can be prevented and treated by taking care of your health regularly, eating healthy food, exercising, and taking medication as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions, consult a doctor for proper advice.
