The Metabolic Bone Disease Subspecialty: MBOG

Dear esteemed members of the subspecialty section of orthogeriatrics and metabolic bone disorder (MBOG),

As the president of the subspecialty section of orthogeriatrics and metabolic bone disorder for the term 2024-2026, I wish to express my deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation for the steadfast support and collaboration extended by each of you. As a collective, we remain resolutely committed to advancing the standards of healthcare and augmenting the body of knowledge in the fields of geriatric orthopaedics and metabolic bone disorder. Our endeavors will continue to be guided by a clear, meticulously devised strategy aimed at securing the highest possible benefit for both our patients and society at large.

In furtherance of this mission, we have outlined an ambitious and comprehensive plan for the continual improvement and development of our annual operational initiatives in the domains of education, research, and clinical service delivery. These efforts will be fully aligned with our overarching strategic objectives and the curriculum for the training of resident physicians. Our overarching aim is to ensure that the care we provide is of the highest standard, meticulously responsive to the dynamic and evolving needs of the aging population. Additionally, we shall persist in refining and advancing specialized training programs in geriatric orthopaedics and metabolic bone disorder, thereby ensuring that our trainees acquire the requisite expertise and competency to excel in these highly specialized and crucial fields.

Moreover, we are in the process of establishing the Thailand research society for osteoporosis, metabolic bone disorder, and sarcopenia, which shall function as a central hub for scholarly inquiry and research in these vital areas. Through collaborative research across multiple esteemed centers, we aim to significantly enhance our understanding of these conditions and develop cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment strategies that will substantially benefit patients throughout Thailand.

Our commitment to fostering collaboration extends beyond national borders. We endeavor to strengthen and deepen the partnerships between the subspecialty section of the Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand and a broad array of public and private sector organizations. We also aim to cultivate robust academic networks with internationally renowned institutions, thereby facilitating the advancement of global academic initiatives and pioneering research collaborations.

In the domain of clinical services and interdisciplinary academic activities, we remain steadfast in our commitment to developing comprehensive care programs for elderly individuals at heightened risk of falls and fractures. Furthermore, we are dedicated to the creation of a national registry for patients experiencing fractures due to frailty within the public healthcare system. We shall also advocate for the systematic implementation of Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), designed to prevent recurrent fractures, while ensuring that all aspects of our clinical care are consistent with internationally recognized standards, as delineated in the "Map of Best Practice."

It is with the greatest sincerity and profound respect that I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all members for your continued support and collaboration in the realization of these essential initiatives. I am fully confident that, through our collective efforts, we shall continue to advance the quality of care provided to elderly patients and individuals afflicted with metabolic bone disorder, thereby ensuring that our contributions to this field remain of the highest possible standard.

Yours most respectfully,

Squadron Leader Thanut Valleenukul, MD
