How to treat osteoporosis-related spinal fractures?

Nav. Lt. Comm. Thanut Valleenukul, MD

This video discusses the problem that follows osteoporosis, which is spinal fusion. This is a common problem in the elderly and has a significant impact on quality of life.

Causes and effects of spinal fusion

Main cause:

  • Osteoporosis causes the spine to lose its density and easily break.

Impact:

  • Decreased height
  • Back pain
  • Breathing problems
  • Movement problems
  • Pinched nerves

Treatment of spinal fusion

  • Non-surgical treatment: For patients with mild symptoms, such as painkillers, rest, physical therapy, and back support devices.
  • Surgical treatment: For patients with severe symptoms, such as severe pain, inability to walk, or pinched nerves, common treatments include:
  • Cement injection: To strengthen the collapsed part of the spine.
  • Open surgery: To correct nerve compression, and metal may be inserted to hold the spine strong.

Prevention and post-treatment care

  • Prevention of osteoporosis: Eat foods that contain enough calcium and vitamin D, exercise regularly. And avoid risk factors
  • Aftercare: Take medication as prescribed by the doctor, do physical therapy, and prevent falls.

Summary: Spinal fusion is a problem that significantly affects the quality of life of the elderly. Appropriate treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms and the patient's physical condition. Regular bone health care and regular health check-ups with a doctor will help prevent and delay the onset of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of spinal fusion.

Recommendations: If you or someone in your family has chronic back pain, reduced height, or a hunched back, you should see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
